Plasmodium Exploitation of Liver-specific Methionine Metabolism
Malaria remains the most serious parasitic infectious disease. Upon infection, mammalian-infectious parasites target hepatocytes where tens of thousands of erythrocyte-infectious merozoites are generated. The reason behind this high replication rate remains unexplored. We hypothesize that the explanation lies in the unique mammalian hepatic methionine metabolism and specifically on the liver-specific MAT1 enzyme. The project can reveal new prophylactic/therapeutic targets against malaria.
